Files that begin with a '.' are hidden. Generally, these files contain configuration information and are hidden so that they are not accidentally deleted. If you need to modify a hidden file like .htaccess, then you will need to view hidden files so you can delete and upload them.

There are several ways to edit, delete, and upload hidden files. If you are using an FTP client, you should be able to change the settings so that your hidden files are viewable.

This can happen when you are behind a firewall or are running a personal firewall like Black Ice Defender or ZoneAlarm.

To fix this, go into your FTP program settings and find the setting for "Passive Mode" or "PASV Mode". If it is turned on, turn it off. If it is off, turn it on.

While the Finder program on Macintosh computers can connect to any FTP server, a limitation of the program is that it can only connect with read access. That means you will not be able to upload any files or change anything on the server while using Finder, and will need to use an FTP program such as the 'ftp' terminal program or Fetch.

When prompted, use the following information to connect to Go Web's FTP servers:

Access: FTP
FTP Host: ftp.gowebsystems.com
Host Directory: /httpdocs

Login: [Your Go Web FTP user name]
Password: [Your Go Web FTP password]

If you have problems connecting, and you know that you are using the correct information, try checking the box labeled "Use Passive FTP".

To fix this problem, generally caused by being behind a firewall, find the setting in your FTP program for "Passive Mode" or "PASV Mode" and turn it on.

Also, be sure that the hostname that you are connecting to is: www.yourdomain.com

Note: If you're using FTP on the command line, you can get into passive mode
by typing PASV.

Some FTP programs open multiple connections to the server unnecessarily, and reach the maximum number of connections per user that we allow.

If you cannot turn off this option in your program by checking an option such as "Server does not support resume" then, please download a different FTP program such as WS_FTP which does not have this problem of spawning more and more connections unnecessarily.

Go Web currently support SFTP. However, SCP provides the same functionality (secure file transfer). WinSCP is an excellent free program for using SCP.
